Nissan Launches 3rd-Generation e-POWER Hybrid in Europe with SUV Qashqai

On June 26, Nissan officially unveiled its third-generation e-POWER hybrid technology in Europe, debuting in the popular SUV Nissan Qashqai 2025. The upgraded system brings the electric driving feel of an EV—without the need to plug in—offering a practical solution for drivers who want low-emission performance with the convenience of petrol refueling.

What Is Nissan e-POWER?
Nissan e-POWER is an advanced hybrid system in which the electric motor powers the wheels directly, while a petrol engine acts only as a generator to charge the battery. This configuration delivers smooth, quiet, and instant acceleration similar to a fully electric vehicle—without requiring external charging.

Key Features of the 3rd-Generation e-POWER System
The latest e-POWER system is more compact and efficient, integrating all core components—electric motor, generator, inverter, and gear system—into a single unit. Improvements include:

Lighter, all-in-one design: Reduces vehicle weight for better efficiency and responsiveness

New 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine: Operates at low RPMs for quiet, fuel-efficient performance

Increased thermal efficiency: Lowers emissions and boosts energy output

EV-style driving: Instant torque, regenerative braking, and seamless power delivery

The third-generation e-POWER enhances every aspect of this concept. Fuel consumption has been slashed to an impressive 4.5L/100km (WLTP), enabling a driving range of up to 1,200 kilometers on a single tank. CO₂ emissions have been lowered by 12%, dropping to 102g/km, supporting both environmental commitments and reduced ownership costs.

Refinement is another key highlight: thanks to an advanced sound insulation package and a newly calibrated engine, cabin noise is reduced by up to 5.6dB, delivering near-silent cruising reminiscent of a full electric vehicle. Additionally, Sport Mode now provides a 10kW power boost, pushing total output to 151kW (204 hp) for a more dynamic and engaging drive.

Central to this advancement is a newly developed, modular 5-in-1 powertrain unit that integrates the electric motor, generator, inverter, reducer, and increaser into a lighter, more compact package — reducing mechanical complexity and increasing efficiency. The heart of the system remains a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo petrol engine, now exclusively designed for e-POWER. Employing Nissan’s proprietary STARC combustion technology, thermal efficiency reaches a class-leading 42%, ensuring quieter operation and better fuel economy.

A larger turbocharger and optimized engine calibration enable a 200 rpm reduction in highway engine speed, contributing to quieter performance and further fuel savings. The system also benefits from low-friction 0W16 lubricating oil and extended service intervals from 15,000 to 20,000 km, increasing convenience and reducing running costs.

Though the 2.1 kWh lithium-ion battery capacity remains unchanged, software and system refinements now enable faster regenerative braking and smoother energy management, maximizing efficiency especially in stop-start urban traffic.

Quieter, More Refined Ride
The new powertrain significantly cuts cabin noise and vibration—especially at higher speeds—offering a smoother, more premium driving experience. A dedicated Sport Mode provides extra acceleration for drivers who want more dynamic performance.

Built in the UK, Rolling Out Across Europe
The third-generation e-POWER system is being produced at Nissan’s Sunderland plant in the UK. The Qashqai e-POWER 2025 will be available across European dealerships starting September 2025, with additional market launches planned for the near future.

A Practical Step Toward Electrification
As Europe transitions toward more sustainable mobility, Nissan’s latest hybrid SUV offers an ideal middle ground. It delivers the benefits of electric-style driving—like quietness, smoothness, and efficiency—without range anxiety or dependence on charging infrastructure.

For drivers who want an environmentally conscious SUV that’s easy enjoyable to drive, the Nissan Qashqai e-POWER 2025 stands out as a smart and timely choice.
